A money mule moves criminal proceeds, sometimes without understanding the whole scheme

Recruitment can look like a job, romance, investment, or favor. Moving the money still creates serious risk.

Fraud & ScamsReviewed Aug 15, 2026

Neutral parcels arrive from several origins, pass through one intermediary hub, and split toward other destinations while one parcel pauses for review.

The role in the chain

A money mule receives or transfers funds connected to crime. The account creates distance between the victim, the organizer, and the final destination. Some participants knowingly assist. Others are recruited through fake jobs, romance manipulation, investment pitches, or requests to move money on someone else’s behalf.

Warning signs

Be cautious when a supposed employer or online contact asks you to receive money, keep a percentage, open accounts, buy cryptocurrency, forward packages, or move funds for people you have not met. A legitimate job does not require an employee’s personal account to route customer money.

Defensive and investigative context

For fraud teams, a mule determination should not rest on one unusual transfer. Review account age, funding sources, counterparties, velocity, customer explanation, device and identity context, prior behavior, and links to confirmed cases. Escalate through the organization’s legal and compliance procedures. This material is for general information and is not legal advice.

Stop before moving the next payment

Do not send another transfer merely to release prior funds or satisfy the person directing the scheme. Contact the financial institution through its official channel and follow the relevant public reporting guidance. A public article cannot determine a person’s criminal intent or legal exposure; individual cases require the responsible institution and, where appropriate, qualified legal advice.

Example: the remote job uses a personal account

A supposed employer sends funds and instructs a new hire to forward most of them to another person, keeping a fee. The task does not require a legitimate employer to use the worker’s personal account as a transfer hub. The incoming payment can later be disputed while the outgoing payment is gone, leaving the worker with loss and possible scrutiny.

Evidence matters more than a label

A financial institution may see account opening, counterparties, timing and customer contact; the customer may hold messages and instructions. Those sources can clarify what happened, but intent and legal responsibility require proper investigation. Avoid publicly naming a person a mule from one transfer pattern. The immediate safety step is to stop further movement and use official institutional and reporting channels.

Device and behavior signals

The strongest fraud decisions often come from sequence and context, not from treating one device or graph link as identity proof.
