DOE Opens Annual Basic-Research Call for Up to $400 Million
The Office of Science opportunity spans seven research programs and remains open through September 30, 2027, unless a successor notice replaces it sooner.

The U.S. Department of Energy has announced an annual Office of Science opportunity offering up to $400 million for basic research. The call is intended to advance scientific knowledge and provide foundations for future technologies.
Seven programs under one call
The opportunity reaches seven parts of the Office of Science:
- Nuclear Physics
- Biological and Environmental Research
- Advanced Scientific Computing Research
- Isotope R&D and Production
- Fusion Energy Sciences
- Basic Energy Sciences
- High Energy Physics
Formally a Notice of Funding Opportunity and informally called the Open Call, the mechanism lets the Office of Science seek applications from institutions for work outside the subjects covered by its more specialized fiscal 2027 notices.
How long the notice remains available
The current notice remains open through September 30, 2027, unless a successor notice replaces it earlier. DOE issues the Open Call annually at the beginning of the fiscal year.
The Office of Science says it supports physical-sciences research at hundreds of universities across the country and oversees 10 DOE national laboratories. The announced sum is up to $400 million for a funding opportunity, rather than a report that awards totaling that amount have already been made.
